8/31/2008 Small Particle Corticosteroid Inhalers Can Improve Small Airway Performance in AsthmaSummary Mean forced expiratory flow between 25 and 75% of forced vital capacity, percentage fall in forced vital capacity with administration of adenosine-5-monophosphate and methacholine causing a 20% fall in FEV1, CT scans before and after methacholine challenge, single breath nitrogen closing volumes, and alveolar exhaled nitric oxide. Seven subjects received placebo and nine ciclesonide. The ciclesonide group demonstrated improvements in exhaled alveolar nitric oxide and CT measurements of expiratory lung volume after methacholine challenge. There was no difference between ciclesonide and placebo treated groups in other measured parameters. The authors concluded that "inflammation and patency of small airways, reflected by alveolar exhaled nitric oxide and air trapping on CT scan," both improve with ciclesonide." Reference
