Montelukast vs. Salmeterol in Exercise Asthma

Summary
This investigation involved 47 adult patients with exercise-induced asthma. It was a three-way crossover trial employing montelukast 10 mg, inhaled salmeterol 50 mcg, and placebo. These drugs were given in random order. Following administration, exercise challenge was performed. The major outcome was change in FEV1.

As expected, montelukast did have a beneficial effect in preventing exercise-induced bronchospasm as did salmeterol. Perhaps what was unexpected was that both effects were similar in magnitude. Montelukast also exerted a longer duration of activity (24 hours).
