Shrimp-allergic subjects tolerate glucosamine

Summary
Background – Shrimp shells are a major source of glucosamine (Gl) in preparations now used extensively in attempts to reduce joint manifestations. Therefore, there is concern that Gl preparations may induce allergic reactions in shrimp -allergic individuals.

Findings – Villacis et al of Tulane Univ in New Orleans studied 15 adults with documented shrimp allergy.
Double blind, placebo controlled challenges with both synthetic and shrimp shell-derived Gl (up to 1,500 mg) were tolerated without any adverse reactions

The authors concluded that Gl, whether alone or in “glucosamine chondroitin” preparations, do not contain sufficient amounts of shrimp allergen to induce allergic reactions in shrimp-allergic individuals.

Editor's Comments
These findings are encouraging in light of the large, increasing number of individuals using Gl-containing preparations sold in a variety of retail outlets where labeling of contents may be insufficient.
