Cell phone interference with the operation of mechanical ventilators

Summary
Background - Cell phones have become ubiquitous with their use in a wide variety of environments. Therefore, it is conceivable that cell phones could be used by visitors or even hospital staff who are physically close to individuals being treated with mechanical ventilators.

Findings - Shaw et al of the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA studied the effects of cell phone use on 14 different mechanical ventilators. When cell phones were used 100 cm (40 inches) from the ventilators, no malfunction occurred. However, 6 of the 14 ventilators malfunctioned when the cell pone was used at less than 30 cm (12 inches) from the ventilators.

Conclusions - Cell phones should be used no closer than 40 inches from any mechanical ventilators.

Editor's Comments
I reviewed this report because patients with acute severe asthma exacerbations sometimes require mechanical ventilation. Some health care workers carry cell phone all the time, including use of them instead of a pager. Many hospitals forbid the use of cell phones in any area where ventilators or other acute care electronic/mechanical devices are employed. However, it should be noted that some other wireless devices, including 2-way pagers have been reported to affect ventilator function.
